The Italian trio T.H.U.M.B graced our ears with their 2003 Overloaded Rock ’N’ Roll EP and the 2004 follow up Lunar Flight. Nine heavy eclectic songs that varied not only in style but also in quality. With their first full-sized album Primordial Echoes For Modern Bigfoots they celebrate their tenth year anniversary and keep the variations in music they bombarded us with eight years ago but improve every bit of their ability and storm the gates to claim their rightful place on the stage of heaviness. They show their aptitude in writing, composition and above all daring to not change a winning riff or chug. Sometimes we hear lumbering beasts and animals dragging themselves to their death only to be treated to some folk picnic or a space age soar towards distant planets. Which in turn are molested and destroyed by wrecking ball riffs and tattooed fists. Blazing, almost tornado like drums and hurricane bass. After searching for the right words to really describe this giant I reckon we should go with apocalyptically good. This is what happens when you push the right buttons!

T.H.U.M.B. – Primordial Echoes For Modern Bigfoots (Go Down Records, 2012)

Credevamo di esserceli persi per strada iT.H.U.M.B., e invece eccoli di nuovo in sella al loro bigfoot, pronti a scaricarci addosso tonnellate e tonnellate di pesantissimi riff.

Primordial Echoes For Modern Bigfoots è il loro terzo disco (che segue Overloaded Rock’n'Roll e Lunar Flight), che ce li ripropone più o meno come li avevamo lasciati, ovvero sempre intenti a suonare uno stoner rock’n'roll fuzzoso e iperacido a volumi esagerati.
Onesto  heavy psych sound forgiato negli anni Novanta (quindi con chiari rimandi all’hard dei Seventies), che non avrebbe affatto sfigurato nel catalogo della Man’s Ruin o della Meteorcity. Le iniziali “Bigfoot” e “Monstergods” rimandano infatti direttamente alla scuola desertica e motoristica dei vari Fu Manchu e Nebula, ma l’album presenta alcune interessanti variazioni sul tema, in primis l’allucinato numero country blues malignetto di “Lived Namow”, ma anche la cromatissima e catchy (dalle parti dei QOTSA) “Inconsistence”.

A seconda degli umori si sprofonda in abissi psichedelici, come verso la metà della densissima “Superlover”, oppure si parte in orbita inseguendo un’idea di space stoner cara ai primi Monster Magnet (“Into The Deepest Green”). I T.H.U.M.B. suonano comunque sempre massicci, donando in alcuni casi un’aura oscura alle loro composizioni, rendendoli interpreti di un plumbeo doom blues che lascia il segno (“Wear It Out”, cover di un brano dei 500 Ft Of Pipe).
Insomma, un ritorno gradito e riuscito; insieme a Black Rainbows e Gandhi’s Gunn ai vertici dello stoner rock nostrano.

:: T.H.U.M.B. - Primordial Echoes For Modern Bigfoots - (Go Down Records - 2012) Si scaglia sulla terra in un’esplosione rockeggiante, rauca e cattiva la veemenza dei T.H.U.M.B., essenziale trio veneto che con chitarre distorte e pesanti riff nella migliore delle tradizioni stoner pubblica questo terzo album dall’iniziatico titolo “Primordial echoes for modern bigfoots”, primordiale è infatti il termine giusto per rendere l’idea della natura del suono che caratterizza questo album sin dall’intro di “Bigfoot”, una prima traccia che sembra emergere dal sottosuolo a passi pesanti e lenti; niente fronzoli, nessun effetto in particolare, solo puro stoner rock e una voce dal sapore vintage che mastica sabbia e psichedelia e che rievoca atmosfere kyussiane o, come in “Inconsistence”, distorsioni acide in puro stile Q.O.T.S.A. che caratterizzano più o meno tutto l’album. Curiosi spaccati tematici sparsi qua e là danno il giusto tocco di originalità a quest’album che sorprende con una traccia dal sapore country e dalla durata di un pugno di secondi, “Lived Namow”, passi di stivali che calpestano il deserto e voce ubriaca che disorienta e destabilizza, e in men che non si dica è già cominciata la traccia successiva, “Superlover”, che porta con sé il gusto acido e vecchio stampo di atmosfere del passato e il solito giro di chitarra bassissima e cupa. Forti richiami seventies, dovuti anche alle suggestioni della registrazione con cui si è chiaramente mirato a questo effetto, sono chiari in “Wear it Out”, ottima la resa della voce effettata alla maniera blues senza la quale il pezzo sarebbe risultato monotono, così come anche nella successiva rock’n’roll track “Road Song”. Con “Into The Deepest Green” i T.H.U.M.B. raggiungono le vette dello stoner ma anche della psichedelica monolitica, è il pezzo che più li rappresenta e anche quello che più resta in testa. Con le ultime tracce i T.H.U.M.B. mostrano sempre più spesso il loro lato rock’n’roll regalando ancora uno spaccato western con “East Clintwood” per poi riaffondare le corde in un giro di acid rock con la ostica e paleolitica “Pietrosaurus”. Risultano molto più distese le atmosfere in “Reaching The Afterglow”, affascinante, psichedelica e ricercata, un piccolo capolavoro! Con “Stonebridge Deluxe” si giunge all’ultima traccia di “Primordial echoes for modern bigfoots”, un lavoro che non delude le aspettative, l’album giusto per chi come i T.H.U.M.B. è stato assente dalle scene per un po’. French review: T.H.U.M.B. - Primordial Echoes For Modern Bigfoots Sorti sur le label Go Down Records en 2012 Chroniqué par Laurent

Venise, ses canaux sinueux, ses petites rues calmes, ses gondoles, ses flots de touristes… et son groupe de stoner « maison », T.H.U.M.B. ! Forcément, à première vue, le contraste rebute un peu. Pour autant, le trio vénitien s’inscrit franchement dans la droite lignée des meilleurs groupes de stoner transalpins, aussi étonnant que cela puisse paraître. Huit années après sa précédente sortie vinylique (soyons honnêtes… on avait oublié jusqu’à leur existence) ils déboulent avec une nouvelle rondelle chez les excellents Go Down Records. Le premier constat est que la prod est un peu sommaire, parfois rêche, les bords sont mal ébarbés : la saturation croustille un peu, le fuzz crépite, clairement les potards sont tous sur 11. Au final, le souffle sourd qui sort des enceintes est chaud et rauque, brut de décoffrage certes, mais globalement plutôt séduisant. Le genre musical pratiqué ici ne chamboulera pas grand monde : le stoner très classique du groupe se compose pour l’essentiel de morceaux lancinants, parfois plus punchy, de riffs lourds, le tout accompagné d’une basse ronde et grasse bien saturée (hmmm, l’intro de « Reaching the afterglow »), et d’une batterie qui met le paquet sur les rondelles cuivrées, les roulements et la frappe de mulard dès qu’il s’agit de susciter le headbang (« Road song », « Pietrosaurus »). Petit point faible : les vocaux, même s’ils remplissent leur modeste office (plutôt second rôle, voire même figurant au casting), ne cassent pas trois pattes à un canard cul de jatte. Pour le reste, franchement, cherchez pas trop loin : c’est la musique idéale à enfourner dans le lecteur de CD de sa voiture, le bras dehors contre la portière, à tracer la route sous le cagnard… Ca groove, ça dépote, et pour autant ça se permet de coller quelques passages ambiancés plus psyche voire space-rock (en recourant notamment à quelques insertions de claviers ou d’harmonica). Ne vous laissez pas décourager par l’assez médiocre artwork qui orne cette galette : même si l’on n’est pas face au disque le plus excitant de la décennie, cet album plutôt sexy devrait sans problème satisfaire pleinement la plupart des fans de stoner traditionnel. Un disque modeste par ses ambitions mais plaisant par son attitude. Un positionnement marketing pas si stupide au final…

T.H.U.M.B. are an Italian Stoner-Psych trio who incorporate lots of spaced out effects into their songs. Primordial Echoes For Modern Bigfoots is the band’s first new release since 2004′s Lunar Flight EP.
Compositionally, the 12 songs on the album are pretty basic, but what gives T.H.U.M.B. their character is their raw, dirty sound, punky vocal style, and their use of effects. Songs like Monstergods and Superlover feature down ‘n dirty spaced out Stoner Rock, with the latter song have especially cool tripped out guitar effects. Wear It Out is similar but with a far more valium-like sludgy quality. Inconsistence starts off as a more straightforward rocker, though still packs a stoned punch and has some killer psyched out guitar. Either someone else is singing or the vocalist just changed his style for this song, which is more “normal” singing and lacks the raw, punky edge of the other tracks. Road Song and Stonebridge Deluxe feature hip shakin’ stoner rock ‘n roll. Lived Namow goes in a completely different direction, being a 2 minute acoustic guitar and harmonica Blues tune. But as examples of deep space Stoner Rock my favorites of the set are Into The Deepest Green and Reaching The Afterglow. Both have great guitar effects, and Reaching The Afterglow goes totally Stoner Space Rock. It rocks hard, has a good groove, brain candy psych guitar, and has the freakiest spaced out effects on the album. Lots of variety on this one. Overall a pretty good set. A few songs tended to meander too much, but when T.H.U.M.B. find the right combination of groove and effects, they’re a hell of a lot more interesting than many of the contemporary stoner bands.

Il super stoner torna all'assalto con "Primordial Echoes for Modern Bigfoots", atteso ritorno dei trevigiani T.H.U.M.B. a ben sei anni dallo scioglimento. Una reunion insperata per il power trio che in passato ci aveva deliziato con album drogati e irsuti come "Overloaded Rock'n'Roll" e "Lunar Flight". Paolo 'Bokal' (basso, voce), Luca 'The Zmudah' (chitarra, voce) e Lisa (batteria) sono sempre gli stessi, fautori di uno stoner granitico, imbastito a dovere con infiltrazioni space, cannonate rock'n'roll e vibrazioni Seventies. La registrazione è sporca e garage, tuttavia non si dà molto peso a quest'aspetto: qui contano le canzoni, che restano polverose, monolotiche, allucinatorie.
Bordate stoner rock che fanno gelare il sangue nelle vene ("Inconsistence", la bellissima "Superlover", "Pietrosaurus"), arditi e melodici passaggi boogie ("Road Song"), intermezzi acustici da sbronza al bar ("Lived Narrow"), bizzarre zuffe western stoner ("East Clintwood"). Tutto ciò erano e sono i T.H.U.M.B., propulsori incontenibili della psichedelia heavy. Passaggi lavici di marca sabbathiana ("Monstergods") e aperture lisergiche ossessive ("Into the Deepest Green") conducono fino alla commovente cover di "Wear It Out ", dal colosso "Dope Deal" dei mai troppo compianti 500 Ft of Pipe: pura archeologia heavy psych. Il finale epico ("Reaching the Afterglow") e dopato ("Stonebridge Deluxe") congeda con la grazia di un mammut da questo universo monolitico e cavernoso.
Se il moderno uomo bigfoot è alla spasmodica ricerca di viaggi stoner psych, ecco la ricetta ideale per soddisfarne gli umori.

Questo disco dei T.H.U.M.B. è così sporco e stoner che mentre lo suonate per la stanza vi sentirete gli abiti infangati di polvere e terra, così come avrete la bocca arida e assetata. Acid rock straight edge fino alla morte senza concessione alcuna, bisogna aspettare il brano numero sette per averne una alla melodia e ad un minimo di mid tempo. Le chitarre sono registrate ultra basse, ad un livello prossimo alla lava vulcanica. La voce probabilmente proviene dal sottosuolo. Acido e senza compomessi significa però anche ostico all’ascolto e chi non mangia pane e Monster Magnet ogni giorno non ce la farà, morirà con loro. [***]

"Primordial Echoes For Modern Bigfoots" ist der dritte Tonträger der 2000 gegründeten italienischen Stoner Rock-Band T.H.U.M.B.. Das Trio veröffentlichte 2003 "Overloaded Rock'n'Roll" und ein Jahr später folgte "Lunar Flight".

Die Combo hat bereits mit vielen internationalen Genregrößen wie unter anderem Alabama Thunderpussy, Black Hole Of Huleira, Gonzales, Gorilla, Los Natas, OJM, That's All Folks oder den Underdogs die Bühne geteilt. Vorliegendes Album, mit zwölf Tracks und einer Spielzeit von über fünfundfünfzig Minuten sehr gut gefüllt, bietet Stoner Rock, wie er sein soll.

Da gibt es nichts zu meckern... T.H.U.M.B. hat alle Zutaten des Genres zu einem sehr guten eigenen Cocktail gemixt und sich darüber hinaus auch noch mit Erfolg an die Wurzeln des Blues gewagt. Der kurze Abstecher zum 12-Takter heißt "Lived Namow". Dafür wird die akustische Gitarre geschultert und die Mundharmonika ausgepackt. Die tolle Drummerin Liz aktiviert den Schellenring und viel mehr braucht T.H.U.M.B. auch nicht für einen sehr bodenständigen Blues aus der akustischen Schublade.

Mit tiefer Psychedelic versehen gibt man sich dem Blues in "Reaching The Afterglow" abermals hin. Hier spürt der Hörer in fast sieben Minuten auch die Härte der Band. Auf der Platte haben keine Gäste mitgewirkt und dennoch spielt der Dreier einen Stoner Rock, der richtig volltönend daherkommt. Es liegt aber nicht unbedingt daran, dass der Bassist Bokal auch Synthesizer-Sounds einsetzt. Irgendwie scheint es der Gruppe in die Wiege gelegt worden zu sein, so zu klingen.

T.H.U.M.B. bietet granitharten Stoner Rock, der immer wieder durch spacig-psychedelische Einschübe verfeinert wird. Die im Team geschriebenen Songs zeugen von Ideenreichtum und schon die Albumeröffnung "Bigfoot" ist so staubig-dreckig wie eine wochenlang nicht gekehrte Straße. Nach einem besinnlichen Einstieg rifft sich die E-Gitarre den Arsch wund und zwischendrin serviert uns The Zmudah auch noch ein höllisches Solo. Er scheint dabei auf der Flucht vor dem Teufel zu sein. Der im Hintergrund agierende Synthesizer sorgt für Hawkwind-Feeling.

T.H.U.M.B. ist auch bei längeren Tracks, die die sechs Minutenmarke knacken, sehr gut drauf. "Wear It Out", die einzige Nummer, die nicht aus der Band-Feder stammt, serviert uns fette, tiefer gelegte Riffs und einen heftigen Schlagzeugeinsatz von Liz. Im Original von der amerikanischen Band 500 Ft. Of Pipe ist dieses Lied ein kleines Beispiel dafür, dass covern auch eine Spezialität der Italiener ist.

"Superlover" ist voll von herrlicher Betriebsamkeit und kann als Anspieltipp empfohlen werden. Mit vollem Wind in den Segeln surft sich die Gruppe in die Herzen eines jeden Stoner Rock-Fans und man muss T.H.U.M.B. zugestehen, dass sie mit diesem Album überzeugen können.

"Into The Deepest Green" ist noch so ein meisterliches Genrestück. Hier mischt man den eigenen Stil sehr schön mit bereits erwähnten Hawkwind. The Zmudah lässt seine zupackenden Riffs schön lange ausklingen und Bokals Gesang passt perfekt zum Band-Sound. Wie war es doch noch mit dem Dreck auf der Straße?

Der Albumtitel "Primordial Echoes For Modern Bigfoots" trifft den Nagel genau dort, wo es sein muss. Der Hammer ist die abermalige Wiederbelebung des Blues in "East Clintwood". E-Gitarre und die Akustische geben sich die Kante und auch hier sollte man sich den Tatendrang der Schlagzeugerin Liz zu Gemüte führen. Die Frau hat es drauf und macht einen mit ihrem zeitweise differenzierten Drumming ganz kirre. Beim Einsatz der akustischen Gitarre kommt einem die Windmühle in den Sinn.

Längere Zeit hat T.H.U.M.B. keine Platte mehr auf den Markt gebracht. Dafür ist "Primordial Echoes For Modern Bigfoots" ganz großartig geworden und reiht sich ohne Probleme in die Liste der sehr guten Stoner Rock-Alben aus 2012 ein. Thumbs up!

"Torniamo in casa GoDown oggi per parlare dei veneti T.H.U.M.B. al loro terzo lavoro, un’impresa di ben 12 tracce che esplora il vasto ventaglio delle sfaccettature rock.

Sono infatti frequenti e ben distribuiti i riff stoner, con quel sound blueseggiante e le distorsioni tendenti al fuzz, come in Bigfoot, traccia contenente tutti gli ingredienti prospettati dal titolo dell’album; la successiva Monstergods, di vago stampo kyussiano; ancora Inconsistence, che tende a strizzare l’occhio più ai QOSTA e più avanti Road Song.

Non ci si fa mancare, inoltre, quel lato un po’ più acustico e decisamente country/folk, grazie a Lived Namow, una ricreata esibizione live dove il nostro musicista apre la porta e zittisce una folla chiassosa col suo blues mezzo sbronzo, oltre a East Clintwood, dall’intro decisamente western, i cui toni vengono fatti perfettamente sposare anche all’interno del pezzo stesso, per quanto decisamente stoner.

La mia impressione, poi, è che l’influenza del rock di stampo anni 90 (panorama di Seattle) abbia influito decisivamente – e chi non ne è stato influenzato? – sulle abilità compositive del trio, nel quale milita orgogliosamente alla batteria la biondissima Liz. Dove mi è parso di sentire questa particolarità? In pezzi come, ad esempio, la strumentale Pietrosaurusoppure la traccia di chiusura Stonebridge Deluxe – solo per citare quelle che mostrano più esplicitamente questo tipo di influenza.

Arriviamo ora agli echoes menzionati nel titolo, raccontandovi il lato psichedelico del trio, che è ben evidenziato alla conclusione di Superlover, ad esempio, oppure sul cominciare e sul finire di Into The Deepest Green (chi ha orecchie per intendere…), anche se devo dire che anche Wear It Out non scherza da questo punto di vista.

Due note particolari: in positivo al penultimo pezzo, Reaching The Afterglow, a mio parere il meglio riuscito di tutti, in negativo al basso volume dedicato alla batteria, che pare appena accennata sotto le imponenti distorsioni di chitarra…peccato!

Ma insomma, il messaggio resta comunque chiaro: Thumb Up a questo trio!"
